CHANGE OF PLANS NETS FUHR WIN #15 IN JAPAN

06-05-27: In mid-April, Heather Fuhr changed plans deciding to race Ironman Japan instead of Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene that conflicted with an unexpected family event and long-time friend, Paula Newby-Fraser’s need for a training partner for another of her out-of-retirement races. With just five weeks to prepare, Fuhr and Newby-Fraser did the Cliff Notes version of Ironman training.

Exiting the bike-to-run transition with a 10 minute deficit and coming off a disastrous run at Ironman Kona last year, Fuhr asked herself: “Would my old form return?” The answer was a resounding ‘yes’ as it was just like old times for the sport’s greatest Pac-Man player. She gobbled-up the race leader by 13km, eased off the throttle and won by over 15 minutes.

Second on the all-time list, this was Fuhr’s 15th career Ironman moving her one notch closer to Newby-Fraser’s mark of 24 career wins. The lightly-trained, usually retired, Newby-Fraser finished a remarkable 4th place.
