MCGLONE WINS IRONMAN 70.3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
LESSING TAKES SILVER MEDAL

Canada’s Samantha McGlone ran away from the field to win Saturday’s Ford Ironman 70.3 World Championships. McGlone set-up her win by bridging a two minute gap to the solo swim leader, Leanda Cave, and starting the run with a group including all the race favorites. McGlone bolted out of transition and opened a 15 second gap over Mirinda Carfrae by mile two. McGlone withstood a determined chase by Carfrae and then Lisa Bentley, to win by 1:32.

The men’s race also came down to a running race with the same winning tactics.  All the favorites, save Chris Legh, entered the bike-to-run transition area together. Craig Alexander took the lead right out of transition and clocked some very fast early miles. Simon Lessing, who gave up 35 seconds in transition to put on socks, worked his way through the field and to within 15 seconds of Alexander at mile 6 but couldn’t get any closer. Chris Legh moved through the field on the strength of the day’s second fastest run to finish 4th. Terenzo Bozzone, struggling with a sore knee, fell back on the run to 6th after posting the day’s second fastest bike split (with Simon Lessing).
